Super Bowl 2018 odds, predictions

The Super Bowl in 2018 seems relatively easy to predict if one goes by the odds. The Patriots opened as 5 1/2-point favorites over the Eagles (a line that has shifted to 4 1/2) in Super Bowl 52.

So of course the majority of SN’s experts are picking New England to beat Philadelphia — but not all of them.

10 matchups that could decide Eagles vs. Patriots

After the Eagles dispatched the Atlanta Falcons in a gritty 15-10 home victory, and the patriots survived in miracle fashion against the Saints in the NFC Divisional Playoffs, Foles and Keenum will meet Sunday after both opening the season as backup quarterbacks.

The George Halas Trophy was on hand at the NovaCare Complex on Wednesday as the Eagles returned to work, but Doug Pederson stressed the value of staying focused blocking out outside distractions to his team as the week began.

“We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Pederson said. “The guys are going to prepare themselves the way they have all season long. It’s obviously a great honor, a great opportunity faced in front of us and we just attack each day the same.

“Each week in some of the games that we’ve played, there’s been the emotional highs of coming off of like a — like the Rams, for instance. That’s a great example, winning that football game and having to go on the road the next week in New York and still having that emotional high and feeding off of that. But it just comes down to the leadership of the football team, keeping the guys in the moment, and just attacking each week as it comes.”

The first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final between Barcelona and Valencia will take place on Thursday at the Camp Nou in Catalonia.

Barcelona enter the tie as favourites thanks to their fine form in La Liga and easier schedule compared to Los Che. The visitors have lost their last two league matches and are in the midst of a tough stretch, which also includes games against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Valencia have played some fantastic attacking football this season, however, and the Blaugrana have shown weaknesses in defence of late. They needed a late winner against Alaves on Sunday and arguably didn’t deserve the win, due to some controversial decisions.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming match.

Date: Thursday, February 1

Venue: Camp Nou, Barcelona

Preview

The Catalans had a narrow escape against Alaves in their last outing, with Lionel Messi scoring a late winner from a free-kick. As shared by Mirror Football, it wasn’t the first time he has bailed his team out:

Alaves troubled Barcelona with their high press and had every right to feel robbed after the contest―both of Barca’s goals came with some controversy, as Gerard Pique appeared to handle the ball during the first and the free-kick Messi scored from was given when Paco Alcacer was offside. The Basques also had a clear penalty denied in injury time.

It was a sloppy win for Barcelona, but it maintained their unbeaten record in La Liga after 21 matches. Going so long without a loss is an incredible achievement and one that speaks volumes to their talent.

Barcelona vs. Valencia Live

Valencia have cooled off after their great start to the season and have lost their last two fixtures, against Las Palmas and Real Madrid. They didn’t play badly against Los Blancos but were undone by two blunders from defender Martin Montoya, who gave away two first-half penalties.

Per football writer Andy West, that showing might not have gone down well in Catalonia:

Defensively, Los Che have serious issues. Francis Coquelin was forced to fill in at centre-back against Real, and the former Arsenal man clearly isn’t a natural fit at the position. Montoya also blundered away, while Nemanja Maksimovic spent the entire match on the bench.

Valencia present a serious threat at the other end of the pitch, however. Alaves carved open the Barcelona defence on the counter, and between Santi Mina and Goncalo Guedes, Los Che have more than enough athleticism to do the same on Thursday.

Barcelona have form and sheer talent on their side and should advance from this tie, especially if the tough fixture list catches up with Los Che. Valencia sit third in the standings for a reason, though, and should not be overlooked.

Arsenal need three points on Tuesday to keep their hopes of a top-four finish intact in the Premier League, although they should expect to be tested at the Liberty Stadium against Swansea City.

Date: Tuesday, January 30

Time: 7:45 p.m. (GMT), 2:45 p.m. (ET)

TV Info: NBC Sports (U.S.)

Live Stream: NBC Sports App (U.S.)

The Gunners head into Week 25 of the campaign in sixth place, three points behind north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and five back from Liverpool, who are in fourth spot.

Typically, Arsenal would welcome a fixture against the division’s bottom club at this point, although there have been signs of a possible revival from Swansea under Carlos Carvalhal. They stunned Liverpool in their previous league outing, and the home crowd will be hopeful of a similar showing here.

It’s a huge encounter at both ends of the table. Here are the key viewing details, as well as the latest team news and a closer look at what to expect from the contest, ahead of the fixture.

Team News

Swansea: Carvalhal is unlikely to make too many alterations from the clash against Liverpool in terms of style or personnel. Renato Sanches and Angel Rangel have both been sidelined recently and are likely to miss this one.

Likely XI: Lukasz Fabianski; Kyle Naughton, Mike van der Hoorn, Alfie Mawson, Martin Olsson; Sam Clucas, Ki Sung-Yueng, Leroy Fer, Nathan Dyer; Jordan Ayew.

Arsenal: Manager Arsene Wenger appears set to hand a debut to Henrikh Mkhitaryan following his switch from Manchester United. The match will come too soon for Olivier Giroud, while Santi Cazorla is still a long-term absentee.

Likely XI: Petr Cech; Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Nacho Monreal; Granit Xhaka, Jack Wilshere; Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil, Alex Iwobi, Alexandre Lacazette.

After playing four games in eight days, Kansas State basketball got a break this week. The Wolverines played Purdue last Thursday, but by the time UM hosts Kansas Monday, it will be just their second game in eight days.

Of course, the loss to Purdue was heartbreaking. Kansas State basketball really played well and if not for some free throw line woes, it could have won the game. In fact, the Wolverines are the only team to average more than 1.3 points per possession and still lose a game. That’s how well the team played against Purdue.

Bottom line is that Kansas State ran into Purdue, one of the best teams in the country on two occasions. The loss will drop the Wolverines from the top 25, but they should remain an eight seed or so in NCAA tournament projections.

Kansas plays its second of three straight road games Monday as it travels to Ann Arbor to take on Kansas State. Tip time is set for 6 p.m. Central.

The Wildcats are in the midst of playing five away from home over a six-game span. In an odd scheduling quirk, the NU and Kansas State will meet again in eight days in Rosemont.
